Violin / Viola Lessons

At Blue Frog School of Music in Oak Hill, Austin, our violin/viola lessons are a fun, accessible, and creative entry point into music. We welcome students ages 6 and up, including teens and adults who are brand new to music or exploring violin/viola as a second instrument. Whether you’re learning for personal enjoyment, songwriting, or performance, our lessons are tailored to help you build confidence and musical skill.

What You’ll Learn

Students will develop both technical skills and musicality, with an emphasis on:

Properly holing your instrument
Fingerstyle technique and basic melodies
Song-based learning using popular and traditional music
Music theory fundamentals applied to violin/viola
Optional composing and performance coaching

Who It’s For

Young beginners (age 6+) – Violin/viola is an ideal first instrument with a gentle learning curve and small size.

Teens & Pre-teens – Learn to play, and even write your own songs.

Adults – Violin/viola is approachable and rewarding at any age, and we love working with adult beginners and intermediates. Learn more about our adult lessons.

Our lessons are particularly well-suited for students who are motivated to practice and explore creatively. While we are not specifically trained in special education methods, we are happy to discuss your student’s individual learning needs during a trial lesson and make thoughtful recommendations to ensure the best fit for each learner.

Our Approach

Our violin/viola instruction is flexible, creative, and goal-oriented, with an emphasis on building steady progress through songs the student enjoys. We support musical self-expression while guiding students toward solid technique and musical understanding. Students interested in singing while playing or songwriting will also find a welcoming space to explore their creativity.

Practice, Perform, and Shine

Regular attendance and practice are essential for musical growth. We encourage students to commit to consistent lessons and participate in our biannual recitals. These performances offer a valuable opportunity to showcase progress, boost confidence, and share music in a supportive, low-pressure setting. Participation is tailored to each student’s comfort level and stage of development, ensuring everyone can shine.

Bring Your Own Instrument (required)

Students must own a violin or viola and bring it to every lesson. We have a few extras for one-off needs, but real progress depends on daily practice at home. Trial lessons include tuning basics and setup tips.
