- Scales, walking bass lines, and groove creation

- Music theory from the bassist’s perspective

Age & Readiness:
Bass guitars are physically bigger instruments—even short-scale models.
For most kids, age 7–8 is the sweet spot for hand size, coordination, and stamina. Six-year-olds are often not ready, but we’ll consider exceptional cases after a trial lesson assessment.

Bring Your Own Instrument (required)
Personalized Instruction for Bassists of Skill Levels
Our private bass classes are custom-tailored for students at every stage of life. For younger beginners, we recommend short-scale bass guitars and use positive reinforcement to make building finger strength and hand-eye coordination fun and encouraging. For teens and adults, we respect your individual musical tastes and busy routines, designing specialized learning tracks whether you want to play recreationally as a creative outlet or learn advanced improvisation to join a local Austin band.
We aim to support a variety of learning styles. While our instructors are not specifically trained in special education techniques, we are happy to discuss your student’s needs during a trial lesson to ensure the best possible learning environment. If another approach may better serve the student, we’re happy to recommend other resources.
A Welcoming Environment Focused on Creating Confident Musicians
At Blue Frog, we believe that true musical growth thrives in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Our instructor roster balances the deep pedagogical knowledge of university-degreed music educators with the real-world wisdom of active, touring industry bassists who live on the stage. We reject rigid, cookie-cutter methods, choosing instead to design custom-tailored, positive reinforcement lesson plans that keep you motivated and inspired every time you pick up your instrument.
Practice, Perform, and Shine
Regular attendance and practice are essential for musical growth. We encourage students to commit to consistent lessons and participate in our biannual recitals. These performances offer a valuable opportunity to showcase progress, boost confidence, and share music in a supportive, low-pressure setting. Participation is tailored to each student’s comfort level and stage of development, ensuring everyone can shine.
[Note: while performing is participatory, attendance is not].
